Karin Karlsbro appointed rapporteur of EU financial assistance to Ukraine

Liberal MEP Karin Karlsbro has been appointed as the European Parliament’s rapporteur (chief negotiator) for economic support to Ukraine.

The first item on the agenda concerns the cooperation mechanism proposed by the European Commission for the G7 countries, which allows for loans to Ukraine of up to 45 billion euros, to be repaid using returns from frozen Russian assets. This is the first time this strategy is being applied in a structured manner and on such a large scale by lenders across the EU and G7.

“While this has been discussed for some time, we now have a genuine opportunity to make Russia pay for the large-scale reconstruction of Ukraine. It is imperative to finalize decisions quickly, and I will work to ensure a swift and efficient process. It’s an honor to be entrusted with leading the Parliament’s efforts to secure long-term support for Ukraine, to win the war against Russia, and to pave their path toward EU integration”  Karlsbro says.

As the standing rapporteur for Ukraine in the International Trade Committee (INTA), Karlsbro will be responsible for all matters related to economic relations with Ukraine during the 2024-2029 term.
